Top 5 on Spotify in 2015

The Internet has forever changed the way that humans live their lives. From being able to get directions in a split second, to accessing seemingly unlimited amounts of knowledge, and you guessed it – consuming music. 2014 saw a huge decline in physical album sales, across CD’s, vinyl and digital sales, with 11% fewer being sold in 2014 versus 2013. However, one area continues to see growth over the years, which is streaming music. There are a number of popular applications both for web and mobile that allow users to access songs on demand without having to have them in their collection. The most popular ones are Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Pandora, and Rhapsody. Spotify is by far the leader in terms of folks who pay for their service, so today we’re going to go over the 5 most streamed artists on Spotify in 2015!

  1. Most streamed artist: Canadian hip hop sensation Drake occupies this spot, having garnered 1.8 billion streams, from 56 million people. He enjoyed success all over the map, with his release entitled If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late selling a over a million copies in the first week.

  1. Most streamed female artist: Rihanna takes this cake in this category, with 57 million people giving her tunes 1 billion virtual spins. Her accomplishment is particularly impressive, as the pop star has not released an album since her 2012 offering, Unaplogetic. However she did release a hugely popular single in 2015.

  1. Most streamed song: The electronic duo Major Lazer (comprised of producers Diplo and Switch) comes in with the most streamed song, period, on Spotify in 2015. With over 540 million listens, this also makes the track double as the most streamed song in the history of Spotify. Currently, the hugely popular hit has over 630 million streams!

  1. Most streamed album: The most streamed artists overall on Spotify was The Weeknd, who’s highly anticipated release Beauty Behind the Madness was streamed 60 million times. In July of 2015, The Weeknd remarkably held all three top Billboard Hot R&B Songs, with 1) Can’t Feel My Face, 2) The Hills, and 3) Earned It. Moreover, he sold over 400,000 albums in the first week of his release.

  1. Most streams in a day: Justin Bieber returned to the charts with his release of the album Purpose on November 13th, 2015. On that day, the 21 year old from Canada racked up 36 million streams, presumably mostly coming from his new album release. Moreover, he sold a whopping 649,000 albums, which is much more than The Weeknd, though Bieber was nearly doubled in terms of streams by the Weeknd.
